<p>Being the fortunate product of a predominantly Black upbringing and a graduate of both one of the US' four remaining Black boarding high schools as well as an HBCU; Black Excellence has surrounded me since birth and was no big deal. At every turn, I readily encountered Black professionals of all kinds. Our family wasn't rich by any means. My parents had emigrated to the US for more opportunities. Always making the most of every one was instilled into my sister and I. As such, I've always had a strong sense of belonging. It hasn't been until recent years that I realized that the true and necessary adage, "If you can see it, you can be it," had been 100% applicable to my life. It had been the silent battery in my back. Now, it's the driving force in the forefront of my mind as I seek deeper influence and impact as a leader within the ad industry. </p> <p> </p> <p>Divine orchestration / guidance is a central truth for me. As it <span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">relates to the current-day necessary movement around diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; from the gap year I spent in abroad, to the mission trip I took to a Kenyan home for abused children, to finding myself being the only Black woman in multiple corporate settings, to walking into an elevator and having a simple, yet life-changing conversation with a stranger, if there is ever a question as to whether I belong in a space, I'm reminded: If I am present...I belong.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">Granted, there is still much to do about making sure more diversity is welcomed in many spaces. However, when the universe conspires to ensure our presence, it's up to us what we do with the opportunities presented - big or small.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">Thus, my mission is to be someone...something of substance and excellence that others coming behind me can see and know that, they too, belong. </span></p>
